This band are not Portishead, as some online gossips would have you believe; but they can hardly blame people for making up stories, given that just about the only solid fact they publish about themselves is that they met via the Bristol trip-hop scene. As well as not being Portishead, they are not trip-hop. Their songs begin with voice and acoustic guitar — provided by Dean Frances-Hawkley in southern Turkey. These tracks are sent to Andy Suttie in Bristol, who embellishes them with other instruments (but no radical sonic engineering). Restraint is the order of the day, whether in the backing or the pared-down lyrics, many of which tell tales of those everyday, but personally significant, childhood moments we carry with us into our adult lives. Pretty, elegant and moving, this is a notable debut.
